Claude Monet

1840-1926


Claude Monet was a key figure in the Impressionist movement and transformed French painting in the later half of the 19th-century. Throughout his long career, Monet depicted nature as well as leisure activities in Paris as well as Normandy's coast.  He helped paved the way for twentieth- century modernism by developing a new technique that captured nature in its purist form.

In his twenties he studied in Paris and his classmates were non-other than Renoir, Bazille (Frederic Bazille) and other future Impressionists. At first his work was critiqued as unfinished and with indistinct forms. Monet wore these critiques like a badge of honor.

Later in life Monet would mainly paint “en plein air” (painting outdoors in front of the scene).  He would paint in large canvases. His quest to capture nature in the most accurate way, led him to reject European rule of composition, colors and perspective. Monet was instead influenced by Japanese wood engravings and used asymmetric layout of forms to emphasize their 2-dimensional form (this was a new outlook for painting).  He used bright/light colors in his primary painting (also known as his underpainting) while in traditional landscapes people mainly used dark colors to emphasize shadow.

Monet was a wealthy and well respected painter and when he died at age 86, the French installed his water lilies series (which was the last series he painted) in Orangerie, Paris where they remain today.

LEARN HOW TO PAINT LIKE MONET

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • A PIECE OF CANVAS PAPER
  • OIL PAINTS (RED, BLUE, YELLOW AND WHITE)
  • PAINT BRUSHES
  • PAINT THINNER
  • PAINT BRUSH CLEANER
  • RAG
  • SKETCH PAD OR SCRAP PAPER
  • DRAWING PENCIL

 

BEFORE WE GET STARTED - REMEMBER THESE THINGS:

  • GESTURE FAST (WITH PENCIL FIRST)

  • REMEMBER YOU CAN'T MESS UP - YOU CAN PAINT OVER IT

  • SPEND TIME MIXING PAINT - LARGE AMOUNTS 

  • FIND YOUR LIGHTEST LIGHTS AND DARKEST DARKS

  • APPLY PAINT QUICKLY AT FIRST THEN SLOW DOWN AND ADJUST SHAPE, CHECK PROPORTIONS AND POSITIONING.

  • ADD POPS OF COLORS AT THE END.

 

IN THIS LESSON WE WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING TECHNIQUES THAT WE SEE IN MONET'S PAINTINGS:

  • LAYERS OF COLOR (EXAMPLE WATERLILIES)
  • PALLET KNIFE TEXTURE
  • A GENERAL COLOR PALLET WITH A POP OF COLOR
  • NEVER JUST WHITE

 

WE WILL BE PAINTING TWO DIFFERENT IMAGES IN THIS EXERCISE.  THE FIRST ONE WILL BE FROM A PICTURE.  THE REASON FOR THIS IS SO THAT THE STUDENT CAN COMPARE THEIR WORK TO SYDNEY'S WORK.  THE IDEA IS NOT FOR THE STUDENT TO COPY WHAT SYDNEY DOES BUT TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING AS TO WHAT NEEDS TO BE LEARNED IN THIS LESSON.  THE SECOND VIDEO WILL BE FROM LIFE.  SYDNEY WILL BE PAINTING SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN THE STUDENT BUT THE SAME IDEAS APPLY.
